The "Power BI and Data Analytics for Enviros" meetup group is all about sharing tips, tricks and hacks for analysing, visualising and communicating environmental data. The purpose of this blog is to summarise the key take-aways from each of the presenters, to help with sharing knowledge, empowering others and creating a strong data culture across our community.

About the Enterprise DNA Challenge!

Enterprise DNA has been running real-world Power BI Data Challenges for the past two years, but November 2021’s challenge was the first focused on environmental data. Entrants were asked to analyse unmasked data on environmental indicators in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region dealing with precipitation, contaminant exposure, and adult and child asthma prevalence. Brian Julius discussed some of the key challenges around analysing and visualising environmental data, such as how to assess a wide range of indicators over different temporal and spatial scales (something which is very familiar for all the enviro’s out there!).

Reviewing the Enviro Reports

Sam McKay reviewed some of the Power BI features of the top entries, from an analytical, visualization and data storytelling perspective, and discussed some of the unique aspects of this challenge and lessons learned compared to past competitions. There was some really interesting visualisations, with loads of cool custom visuals (Icon Map, MapBox, Deneb, Small Multiples, Charticulator… the list goes on), because as we know enviro data doesn’t always fit into the standard Power BI visuals…
